What is CNC milling?

CNC milling is a machining process in which material is removed from a raw part using rotating cutting tools. The term “CNC” stands for Computerized Numerical Control and describes the computer-aided control of the milling machine. This allows precise and complex parts to be manufactured from metal, plastic or other materials.

 

CNC milling machines manufacture milling parts by moving the milling and drilling tools along paths that are specified in an NC program. The NC programs are either entered by the machine operator directly at the CNC control of the milling machine or generated from the CAD (computer-aided design) model of the part with the help of so-called CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software.

How does CNC milling work?

CNC milling parts are machined on CNC milling machines using rotating tools. CNC milling machines with different degrees of freedom of movement are used: 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis milling machines.

 

3-axis milling machines can only mill CNC-machined parts from a single access direction. They are more cost-effective compared to other types of milling machines. 4-axis milling machines include an additional rotational axis for the part, making them suitable for manufacturing spindles and other helical geometries. 5-axis milling machines can process CNC milling parts from all sides, depending on the clamping, and are capable of creating complex geometries.
